Welcome--from all of Phi Delta Epsilon

“We are not pre-meds who want to be friends—we are friends who want to be doctors.”

-Dan Tran, former Vice President of Programming

As pre-med students, we live life in the fast lane. We are constantly moving and constantly working to fulfill our academic requirements and other obligations, while trying to find time to unwind and retain some sanity. Fortunately, there does exist a safe haven from all the stresses of pre-medical life—Phi Delta Epsilon, UCLA’s one and only pre-med, co-ed fraternity. While academics is one of our fraternity’s highest priorities, we realize that on the journey to medical school, academics alone does not define an individual. Our experiences outside the classroom help complement our busy schedules and play an influential role in the shaping who we are as individuals. As such, one of the best and strongest aspects of our fraternity is our tight-knit social network. In Phi Delta Epsilon, nothing compares to the brother and sisterhood. PhiDE provides the perfect balance between our academic and social lives. Simply, we know how to “work hard, play hard.”

With a new school year beginning, we are excited to help jump-start both new members and active members with our improved Academic Program. With last year’s success as a foothold, we will continue to have workshops providing information that will help our members in their preparation and improvement in study habits, interviewing skills, resume building, 4-year planning, med-school applications and research and volunteer opportunities. Frequently we have guest speakers such as doctors and med students share their experiences with our members. Additionally, we often arrange dinners with faculty members, which are great opportunities to ask for letters of recommendations. Some other valuable resources we provide for our members are test banks, book exchanges, MCAT info, and our very own “Bruinwalk,” among other things. This year we will also have presentations that aim to help our members become more aware and better informed about relevant topics in medicine, current scientific findings, medical issues often asked by medical schools.

As our fraternity grows, so too does our Outreach Program. In the past, we have put on puppet shows for sick children at Cedars Sinai Hospital, held “Sex, Drugs, and Alcohol” symposiums for local high schools, and helped with the on-campus Blood Drives (last year, one of the most successful days ever for the Blood Drive was a result of help from Phi Delta Epsilon!) Currently, we make weekly visits to a homeless shelter, and raise money for Children’s Miracle Network of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). Annually, our fraternity participates in campus events such as Run/Walk, AIDS Walk, and Dance Marathon.

As a fraternity, Phi Delta Epsilon places great emphasis on brotherhood and family. For everyone in the fraternity, Phi Delta Epsilon has become a social niche—where the people you bond with become much more than just your friends—they become your brothers, your sisters, your family. We are not here to compete with each other; rather, we provide support, encouragement, and direction. Older members become mentors for the younger members. To facilitate bonding among our members, we have social activities and events such as quarterly retreats, the Family and Big/Lil System, and inter-chapter events with other Phi Delta Epsilon chapters across Southern California.

For me, Phi Delta Epsilon has been an inspiration. The brothers and sisters of Phi Delta Epsilon display passion and commitment in all that they do. The people that I have been fortunate to surround myself with over the past two years are people who I have become my closest friends and greatest support system. With the brothers and sisters of PhiDE, I have found friendships that will last a lifetime.

Sometimes, inspiration is all one needs. Come with us, and experience the rich traditions and legacy of Phi Delta Epsilon.
